The INNSA project aims to develop a Smart and Innovative agriculture platform for sustainable coffee value chains, with a focus on improving quality and added value for key elements of the coffee supply chain in Vietnam. The project is developed based on the foundation of digital transformation and smart agricultural technologies: Smart devices and Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Traceability Technology Provenance and Blockchain, Sustainable Design & Manufacturing. These technologies aim to solve issues related to sustainability, in accordance with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

Main tasks of the project

Task 1: Investigation, field survey and document review on coffee supply chain and value chain in Vietnam
Task 2: Developing the management system and related database of the INNSA platform
Task 3: Installation of IoT packages at coffee farms and standard coffee storage spaces
Task 4: Analyzing and processing big data with AI applications for the INNSA platform to support the decision-making function of cultivating and caring for coffee trees
Task 5: Develop a number of value-added products for the coffee value chain and production chain
Task 6: Integrate data systems and develop applications of the INNSA platform
Task 7: Analyzing and processing big data with AI applications for the INNSA platform to support crop forecasting functions and coffee market trends
Task 8: General project management

Project impact

The strong motivation of the INNSA project is the desire to bring Vietnam’s coffee industry to outstanding development, recognized for its value, brand and sustainability, directly contributing to the ambition to develop Industry 4.0 in Vietnam in general as well as smart and sustainable agriculture in particular.
The project will create the INNSA platform, an infrastructure in the digital economic space of Vietnamese agriculture, starting with coffee and then gradually integrating other crops and livestock. The INNSA platform will have at least 05 main modules/functions: 01 management and digitalization module for the value chain and coffee supply chain in Vietnam, 01 module integrating traceability technology system, 01 artificial intelligence (AI) application module to support the decision-making function of cultivating and caring for coffee trees, 01 electronic information portal introducing the INNSA platform, and 01 online trading floor for products related to coffee.
In addition, the project also participates in training doctoral and master students in the fields of Biotechnology, Agriculture and Information Technology, as well as publishing in prestigious Q1 international journals.
The impact of the InnSA project will be assessed in the short, medium and long term.
– Short term (6 months)
The Big Data-based InnSA platform will improve the coffee supply and value chain through digital transformation, high-tech integration and climate-smart agricultural practices for all parties involved, people will be connected and exchange data to improve their livelihoods and/or businesses.
The expected outcome of the project will be used to develop IoT packages for coffee production on coffee farms and storage in coffee processing facilities. In IoT-based agriculture, a solution system is built to monitor the farm with the help of sensors (light, humidity, temperature, soil, …) and automatic irrigation systems. Farmers can monitor the status of their coffee gardens from anywhere. Such IoT-based smart agriculture is very effective compared to traditional methods.
– Medium term (6 months – 2 years)
Applying Information Technology and Digital Transformation: The project will provide training and consulting for coffee growers and their families to access the most advanced high technologies, in order to achieve the adoption of Information Technology and strengthen the digital skills they need for coffee farming, education and everyday life.
Business / Value Chain Development: Through IT and digital transformation activities and tools developed in training programs, the project seeks to positively impact business processes and operations and improve the value chain of coffee growers through support from local coffee companies such as Iced Coffee.
– Long term (2 years onwards)
About 95% of coffee growers in Vietnam are smallholder farmers, many of whom still live in poverty. In the context of the coffee industry, climate change and unwise agricultural practices are some of the main threats that farmers are facing to improve their livelihood conditions.
The InnSA platform, which includes IoT solutions based on big data, AI technology applied across the coffee value chain, creates and supports coffee farmers looking to transform and demonstrate that it is possible to produce 100% organic, high-tech and sustainable coffee. This initiative is implemented in two key strategic areas: (i) value chain innovation and responsible sourcing, and (ii) smart agriculture that is resilient to climate change and capable of resistant to changes in industry and living environment. Smart and innovative approaches are fundamental characteristics of the project and the InnSA Platform, and we therefore expect that these aspects will have a far-reaching impact on further transformation of Vietnam’s coffee industry.
